Summary

From celebrated New York Times bestselling author, Steve Berry, comes the latest Cotton Malone adventure, in which the discovery of a lost historical document challenges the global might of the United States。

King Ludwig II of Bavaria was an enigmatic figure who was deposed in 1886, mysteriously drowning three days later。 Eccentric to the point of madness, history tells us that in the years before he died Ludwig engaged in a worldwide search for a new kingdom, one separate, apart, and in lieu of Bavaria。 A place he could retreat into and rule as he wished。 But a question remains: did he succeed?

Enter Cotton Malone。 After many months, Malone’s protégé, Luke Daniels, has managed to infiltrate a renegade group intent on winning Bavarian independence from Germany。 Daniels has also managed to gain the trust of the prince of Bavaria, a frustrated second son intent on eliminating his brother, the duke, and restoring the Wittelsbach monarchy, only now with him as king。 Everything hinges on a 19th century deed which proves that Ludwig’s long-rumored search bore fruit--legal title to lands that Germany, China, and the United States all now want, only for vastly different reasons。

In a race across Bavaria for clues hidden in Ludwig’s three fairytale castles--Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee--Malone and Daniels battle an ever-growing list of deadly adversaries, all intent on finding the last kingdom。

I have enjoyed this series for a long time, but this addition to the total just did not do it for me。 Yes, Cotton did his thing, but Casiopeia was missing。 Young Daniel’s gets a girlfriend and we assume the series will morph。 Ok, keep them coming and like it or not I’ll keep reading。 By the way this was one of Scott Brick’s less worthy attempts。 His female Australian accent just did not do it for me。

Steve Berry has written another entertaining tale in The Last Kingdom。 Steve finds interesting historical events and uses them in his novels。 Typically there is some missing or unknown aspect of the event that serves as the fulcrum point to develop the story。 Through in some espionage and plot twists and an interesting adventure unfurls before you。 Highly recommended。 #TheLastKingdom #NetGalley

Cotton Malone is back in Steve Berry’s The Last Kingdom。 The retired agent is called back into action as backup for Luke Daniels, who has infiltrated a group seeking to restore the kingdom of Bavaria。 In the 1880s, King Ludwig II supposedly received a deed to the Hawaiian Islands。 Through the years, the deed had been the subject of unsuccessful searches。 Now, however, new clues have been revealed that could lead to the document’s discovery。 Prince Stefan, a descendant of Ludwig II believes that Cotton Malone is back in Steve Berry’s The Last Kingdom。 The retired agent is called back into action as backup for Luke Daniels, who has infiltrated a group seeking to restore the kingdom of Bavaria。 In the 1880s, King Ludwig II supposedly received a deed to the Hawaiian Islands。 Through the years, the deed had been the subject of unsuccessful searches。 Now, however, new clues have been revealed that could lead to the document’s discovery。 Prince Stefan, a descendant of Ludwig II believes that possession of the deed could allow him to negotiate Bavaria’s secession from Germany。 Deposits of rare earth have been detected in Hawaiian waters, leading the Chinese to become involved in the search。 A renegade group of former CIA agents are also in the race, prepared to kill anyone in their way。The current Duke of Bavaria is dying。 As his heir, Stefan would be the rightful king if he succeeds。 As the trail leads to Ludwig’s empty tomb, Linderhof and Neuschwanstein Castle, Cotton must decipher a series of clues left behind by Ludwig’s advisor to avert the political fallout that the deed could cause in the present。 Mixing history and political intrigue, Steve Berry will keep you on the edge of your seat as the various factions converge on the location revealed by the final clue。 Along the way alliances are broken and not everyone is who they seem。 From his opening scenes to the last pages, Berry makes this a difficult book to put down。 I would like to thank NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing this book for my review。 。。。more

Cotton Malone is helping out a friend from his days with the agency。 It was supposed to be an easy thing; and then it wasn’t。 All of a sudden he is being chased by men with guns。 What could they want? It seems there is something from the late 1800’s that many governments want to get their hands on and they will do anything to get it; even tho no one is sure it even still exists, or even if it ever did。

Why did I give up on The Last Kingdom? For starters, I had no clue who was who。 Nor did I know who worked for who。 I found the introduction to the main characters to be greatly lacking。 As a first time reader of Cotton Malone’s adventures, I do not know any of the characters, and as I said, the introduction to them was greatly lacking。 This is not a good entry point for readers wanting to get into the Cotton Malone series。 It also makes it difficult for readers who would pick this up in bookstores on a whim。I should also note that this book is told in dual-POV。 There are at least five different points-of-view。 The plot is confusing to begin with, I don’t have a proper introduction to the characters, I don’t know who’s who; I had to stop many times and go back to figure out who was narrating a chapter。 I needed help, I needed a lot of help。 The only person who was easily identifiable for me was Albert and that’s only because he’s the bad guy…I think。 I don’t know who I was supposed to be rooting for in all honesty。The issues don’t stop there though。 The plot gets confusing fast。 This is partially an issue with the lack of character introduction and simply because the plot is flat-out confusing。 I failed to mention in my synopsis that this book also involves precious earth metals, the US stealing Hawaii, conspiracy theories, double/triple agents, and a whole lot more; as I’ve said, it gets confusing fast。 I had no idea what was happening for those 200 pages。 There was far too much going on。 I felt very small brained while reading The Last Kingdom。I will say this in Steve Berry’s favor though。 Steve Berry painstakingly details and researches the history he includes in his novels。 I remember that clearly from when I read and reviewed The Omega Factor last year, which I did finish and enjoyed, and said level of detail and research shows once again in The Last Kingdom。 Steve Berry’s high caliber of research and writing is absolutely in this novel, I simply could not follow along。 This book is not for me。Thank you once again to Novel Suspects Insider's Club and Grand Central Publishing for sending me a copy of this book。 Again, if you want to read the full length version of my review then check out my blog www。readinghasruinedmylife。com; I post new reviews every Wednesday at noon。 。。。more

In the 17th Cotton Malone thriller, we go to Germany for a hundred year old Bavarian puzzle revolving around Mad King Ludwig。 There are so many players involved that it is hard to keep everyone straight。 That is part of the story, because alliances keep shifting。 Clever and intriguing。

I have loved every Steve Berry book since reading "The Amber Room" in 2003 but this one felt a little off to me。 I have always enjoyed the way he weaves little known historical events into his thrillers but the historical events in this one seemed to take precedent over the plot and slowed down the pace considerably。 I found myself losing interest about halfway through and even though I finished the book, I wasn't on the edge of my seat to see what happened。 RecommendedThanks to NetGalley and G I have loved every Steve Berry book since reading "The Amber Room" in 2003 but this one felt a little off to me。 I have always enjoyed the way he weaves little known historical events into his thrillers but the historical events in this one seemed to take precedent over the plot and slowed down the pace considerably。 I found myself losing interest about halfway through and even though I finished the book, I wasn't on the edge of my seat to see what happened。 RecommendedThanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for an advanced reader copy。 。。。more

This book, the author says, fulfills a dream; but while the plot is certainly intriguing (and timely), it was so complicated and filled with so many characters that I found myself snoring here and there。 That said, though, it was engrossing enough that for the most part I didn't want to put it down (I even took it to bed to finish, which normally is a no-no for me)。The setting is Bavaria, many years after King Ludwig II reportedly drowned in 1886, three days after being deposed。 But legend has i This book, the author says, fulfills a dream; but while the plot is certainly intriguing (and timely), it was so complicated and filled with so many characters that I found myself snoring here and there。 That said, though, it was engrossing enough that for the most part I didn't want to put it down (I even took it to bed to finish, which normally is a no-no for me)。The setting is Bavaria, many years after King Ludwig II reportedly drowned in 1886, three days after being deposed。 But legend has it he took a few secrets with him, including the results of his search for a new "kingdom" (hence the title of the book)。 Another legend involves the possible existence of a 19th century deed to property that's now extremely valuable; the true owner stands to reap considerable financial benefits if that deed is found。But therein lies the problem; no one seems to know where it might be。 Luke Daniels, who was mentored by former Magellan Billet operative Cotton Malone, is in the German state, managing to infiltrate a somewhat secret group of people who are desperate to gain independence from Germany。 Meanwhile, Malone - who retired a dozen years ago as a U。S。 Justice Department intelligence officer - now lives in Denmark and operates a store that specializes in rare books。 Occasionally, he reverts to his former profession, as he does here when he spots Luke in the middle of a tough situation。 Then he meets up with old acquaintance Derrick Kogen, who asks for help on behalf of another former colleague in dealing with Bavarian Prince Stefan von Bayern, who supposedly is intent on bringing down the United States。 It is then that Cotton learns about former King Ludwig's new kingdom and all the ramifications thereof。If all that sounds a bit confusing, it is; scenes shift from one group of characters to another, and while readers can be pretty sure which side Cotton is on, shoring up the others isn't always so clear。 There are chases, near misses and hits as various characters, including Cotton and Luke, chase down the truth about the new kingdom and the deed。 It all leads up to an action-packed ending with a couple of twists I didn't see coming。 The chases and battles are exciting, and overall it's a rousing adventure。 Many thanks to the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review a pre-release copy。 。。。more

Thanks to Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for the gift of an advanced copy。 You'll find my honest review below。If you've followed me for a while, you know that the Cotton Malone series is one of my long time favorites。 You'll also know that installment #16, The Kaiser's Web, earned a mediocre rating from me - mostly because at the end, Cotton Malone did something completely out of character in my opinion。Last year, we received a Steve Berry novel that wasn't in the Cotton Malone series an Thanks to Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for the gift of an advanced copy。 You'll find my honest review below。If you've followed me for a while, you know that the Cotton Malone series is one of my long time favorites。 You'll also know that installment #16, The Kaiser's Web, earned a mediocre rating from me - mostly because at the end, Cotton Malone did something completely out of character in my opinion。Last year, we received a Steve Berry novel that wasn't in the Cotton Malone series and it was fantastic。This year, we get installment #17, The Last Kingdom。 Cotton's story takes him to Germany again, like in book 16, but this one was back to form。The Last Kingdom had twists, turns, betrayals, revelations, and the introduction of a character that I think will end up being the in the upcoming Luke Daniels spinoff with our favorite Frat Boy。All in all, a fun romp through Bavaria。 Can't wait for more Cotton (and honestly anything else from Steve Berry as well)。Four stars, definitely recommended (but read the rest of the series first!)。 。。。more

I found this latest book by Steve Berry, The Last Kingdom to be a trifle too pedantic。 I just feel that too much time was given to going over the history of King Ludwig II and his family。 It seemed like the information was being repeated over and over。 It felt like it was getting in the way of the flow the story line。 I have read a number of books by Steve Berry。 The latest was The Omega Factor, which had a good back story, but that did not slow down the action。 I was fortunate enough in my yout I found this latest book by Steve Berry, The Last Kingdom to be a trifle too pedantic。 I just feel that too much time was given to going over the history of King Ludwig II and his family。 It seemed like the information was being repeated over and over。 It felt like it was getting in the way of the flow the story line。 I have read a number of books by Steve Berry。 The latest was The Omega Factor, which had a good back story, but that did not slow down the action。 I was fortunate enough in my youth to see a couple of the castles described in the book。 They are indeed wonders to human achievement。 The Last Kingdom just didn’t give me the same flow of entertainment that I normally expect from Berry’s novels。 This book was provided by #novelsuspectsinsider and Grand Central Publishing。 。。。more

An eccentric 19th century king’s wish。 A 21st century global free-for-all。In a weakened Germany, there are those who want the state of Bavaria to return to being an independent country。 One such person is a descendant of King Ludwig II, one of Bavaria’s last kings。 in his final days, Ludwig had tired of the politics and responsibilities of being a king at that moment in history, and wished to start another…。das letzte Koningreich, the last kingdom。 When he died under mysterious circumstances soo An eccentric 19th century king’s wish。 A 21st century global free-for-all。In a weakened Germany, there are those who want the state of Bavaria to return to being an independent country。 One such person is a descendant of King Ludwig II, one of Bavaria’s last kings。 in his final days, Ludwig had tired of the politics and responsibilities of being a king at that moment in history, and wished to start another…。das letzte Koningreich, the last kingdom。 When he died under mysterious circumstances soon after being removed from the throne, there were rumors that he had indeed found and secured that new kingdom, but no proof has ever been found。 His descendants, the Nazis, the CIA, and a mysterious group of black-hooded men have all dedicated time and resources to the search to no avail。Luke Daniels is on loan to another government agency while the future of his own, the Magellan Billet, is in doubt。 He calls on his sometimes mentor and fellow renegade, Cotton Malone, to do him a small favor。 Luke is undercover, working for the brother of the current Duke of Bavaria who hopes to return his family to the throne。 The small favor quickly expands, and Cotton finds himself maneuvering between the many warring factions who have an interest in solving the mystery of the last kingdom, once and for all。The exploits of Cotton and Luke find geopolitics and the lessons of history intertwined。 The last days of the Bavarian royal family, a connection to the overthrow of the kingdom of Hawaii, the music of Wagner, the ambitions of the Chinese government to become the leading superpower, and the ambitions of a noble German family provide a challenging puzzle to solve and all manner of clashes, ambushes, gunfights, and betrayals。 Can Cotton and Luke find the truth behind the rumors and, if so, what will they do with the information…。because it could dramatically affect the future of the United States。 A plot that moves quickly, a mixture of familiar characters and new faces, and an assortment of interesting tidbits of history from a fascinating period in time make this another enjoyable read from Steve Berry。 It isn’t necessary to have read the previous books in the series, the mystery stands on its own…。but if you haven’t read the preceding books, you just might want to go back to the beginning once you’ve read this entry。 Fans of history, particularly German history, will enjoy this, as will lovers of thrillers set against the backdrop of world intrigue。 Thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for the advanced reader’s copy。 。。。more
